Get to know the artist behind the curtain…Sascalia May 19 2014

Currently there are 13 different works of art from Sascalia on Shower Curtain HQ. She is one of my favorite artists since starting this business. Her bright colorful style is so eye catching and unique. Her "Purple Tree" is one of my best sellers. I was so happy to she agreed to answer a few questions so we could all get to know her better…

I absolutely love your style and I am so impressed that you are self taught. Have you been painting and drawing your entire life?
I always loved drawing as a child and studied art and textiles at secondary school but then moved on to other interests so it wasn't until much later after my youngest child started school that I took up art again and rediscovered it.
Is your ETSY shop a business you can work on full time or do you also have a "day-job?"
I work full time as an artist selling my art online mainly on Etsy and Folksy and through licensing.

You have a lot of pieces with trees and flowers. Do you paint from a pictures or still-life?
I love nature and trees and flowers are a big inspiration. I draw, paint and collage and build the pieces as I go along starting from an idea or with a certain colour scheme in mind.
As a mother of 2 little girls, I imagine your art decorates little girl's rooms around the world. Why do you think you have the whimsical storybook look that you do?
I always loved fairytales as a child and still do to this day. I loved listening to them as a child and looking at the magical illustrations that accompanied them.

What did you do before your ETSY shop?
After finishing school, I worked as a child minder looking after young children and then not long after that I had my own three children. When my eldest became old enough to start school, I picked up my interest in art agan and set up my etsy shop and things quickly grew from there.
Where do you get your inspiration?
Inspiration for me comes from many different places, nature is my biggest inspiration. Fairytales, old children book illustrations, art and music inspires me too as well as my love of colour and pattern.

What is a typical day look like for you?
The day starts with getting the children to school and then most days I am then busy in my home studio with online orders making and packing orders. When I am lucky enough to have some time left before the children get back from school then I will grab the chance to grab my sketch book and start work on a new piece of art. Starting by sketching out an idea and then building colour and texture to it and bringing it to life.
Any advice you would give to someone who love to draw and paint and make a business out of it?
Go for it because you never know where it might take you. I had no idea the journey as was about to go on when I started and if I had known I would have been shocked! What started out as a way to earn some extra money working from home quickly became a full time occupation! Art has given me the opportunity to meet and work with many different people from all around the world.
